This new series is aimed at
providing brief, concise identification guides, to all European Coleoptera,
and is intended both for professional and amateur entomologists. Up till now
consice publications are completely lacking for most groups of European
Coleoptera. The most comprehensive work is up till now Die Käfer
Mitteleuropas.
Each volume will treat a systematic unit comprising about 150-500 species.
This will usually mean a family or subfamily, but it can also be a single
large genus, or a group of smaller families. Small and systematically
unrelated groups may also be collected in one volume. The volumes are
published as manuscripts become available and not in a systematical order.
The geographical area covered will include Europe west of the former USSR,
but including Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. Authors may also include one or
more of the adjacent parts of the western Palaearctic Region, i. e.:
Macaronesia, North Africa (Maghreb countries), Cyprus, Asia Minos, Lebanon,
Israel, the European part of Russia, Ukraine, Belorussia, as well as the
Transcaucasian area (Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaidzjan).
Each volume should be well illustrated, and where it is useful for the
identification, all species can be shown in colour, either by colour
photographs or by water colours. Sexual dimorphism and extensive
polymorphism may also be illustrated. All specimens, except the largest,

Water bugs are familiar insects in
aquatic habitats throughout the World. They belong to the order Hemiptera, the
largest insect order with incomplete metamorphosis. There are basically two
kinds: (1) the semiaquatic bugs (Gerromorpha) which live upon the water surface
and (2) the true water bugs (Nepomorpha) which live beneath the water surface.

The Geometrid Moths of Europe is intended for both professional and
amateur entomologists. Among the European Geometrid Moths are a number of

Vol. 4 on Perizomini and Eupitheciini
has now been published and a number of very fine review has been written about

occuring in Europe, has caused a lot of problems to identify, but based on the
many specimens illustrated on the 24 colour plate, the species of this genus can

On additional black and white photos for species which are difficult to
identify, their differential characters are pointed out with arrows. Three new

This book attempts to summarize all that is known about the
nearly 1,500 butterfly species known from West Africa, the fifteen countries
that stretch from Senegal and Mauritania on the Atlantic to Nigeria and Niger in
the east, touching also on the extreme western parts of Cameroun (Mauritania,
The Gambia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Burkina
Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Bénin, Nigeria, and Niger). It is the result
of more than ten years of intensive personal research.
The fauna of West Africa accounts for well over a third of all
butterflies in the Afrotropical biogeographical region, and about one in twelve
of all butterflies known worldwide. Just 25 years ago the area covered was
believed to have just about 1,000 species.
The aims and objectives of the book are:
1) To describe and illustrate all West African butterflies in such a way that
most can be identified by non-specialists. Nearly all species are illustrated in
colour on the 125 plates, many of which have never been adequately figured
before. There are numerous illustrations of genitalia in difficult groups of
Lycaenidae and Hesperiidae.
2) To give their distribution over the fifteen countries of the region to the
extent that this is currently known, as well as their wider distribution in
Africa as a whole. The book thus comprises country records of known butterflies
in these countries, for most of which there are no previous published lists.
3) To indicate their habitats, habits, frequency and host plants as recorded or
personally observed.
4) To place the West African butterfly fauna in a total African perspective and
to give details of the ecological biogeography of West Africa.
5) To contribute to the urgent conservation efforts to maintain the biodiversity
of West Africa.
Butterflies are potentially an important group of indicator
species for biodiversity, ecology, and for biogeographical studies: but such a
role cannot be fulfilled unless they can be properly identified. They constitute
a large group of insects where baselines established now will allow for
long-term assessment of biodiversity loss. African butterflies have also
increasingly been used in studies of butterfly behaviour and in molecular
studies. In the absence of a book like this, confident identification of most
species was a matter mainly for specialists with access to museums and
specialist literature outside Africa. The butterflies of Kenya and their natural
history (Larsen 1991) was meant to fulfil the same role and it has been used
extensively in ecological and ethological studies, as well as conservation work
– not just in Kenya, but also in the neighbouring countries.
Though the author has reviewed virtually all literature on West
African butterflies, the book is largely the result of his personal research
programme in West Africa and in Museums. Before the project started he had
already visited Bénin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and Togo
on various occasions. Between 1993 and 2003 he spent almost two years in the
field, in Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, and western Cameroun. Planned visits
the other coastal countries, especially Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Liberia proved
impossible. Civil strife made this too dangerous, not least for someone without
formal institutional back‑up. However, a positive result of this constraint was
that some important forests in Ghana and Nigeria could be investigated in more
depth than any other localities in tropical Africa. Of equal importance has been
the study of much unpublished material, old as well as new, in museums and
private collections in many parts of the world. In this respect it was
especially important that the African Butterfly Research Institute (ABRI) in
Nairobi sent teams of collectors to many parts of West Africa – partly as
support to the project. Though ABRI shared the same constraints in terms of
access to many countries, much new data was procured – not least from

Besides the aquatic beetles and bugs, insects classified as aquatic normally
develop in water, whereas the adult flying forms are terrestrial. Swarming
mayflies and hovering libellulas are well-known characteristics of lake and
stream shores, whereas their aquatic larvae remain more anonymous for the
general naturalist. On the contrary, insect larvae are nowadays widely used in
environmental monitoring, the actual species composition at a locality providing
reliable evidence on the impacts of acidification and pollution. Environmental
applications have engaged many people in the identification of aquatic insect
larvae, on scientific, commercial or governmental basis. However, these
activities have been hampered by a general lack of an up-to-date standard work
providing modern nomenclature and reliable identification keys including all
known taxa from the region. The present handbook is designed to fill this gap,
as far as taxonomic knowledge is available. Geographically, the handbook focuses
on the Nordic Countries, i. e. Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland. Most
information included will be correct also for the rest of Northern Europe,
although some more southern taxa may be absent from the identification keys and
check lists. The handbook is designed to serve several important purposes. The
introductory text together with the many literature references provided for each
order or family is a rich source of information on natural history, morphology,

behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the
inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and
animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in
biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at
compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa.
We are therefore proud to launch this major series. Volumes will as a minimum contain
standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including
type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is
optional, e. g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliograchical
information; pest status; vector status; etc.
For each volume, the taxon will be presented in a short introduction, eventually with a
few illustrations. This may include a brief diagnosis; outline of possible phylogenetic
relationships with most important apomorphic character status; general biology;
agricultural, medical, veterinary, conservational or other importance.
Introducing World Catalogue of Insects, it is the publisher's intention to offer
a platform for publishing future insect catalogues as it has often proved to be difficult
to find suitable publishing opportunity and in this way to encourage and attract
entomologists currently preparing catalogue manuscripts.
In the first years after the introduction of the series, it is the publisher's intention
to publish approximately one volume per year and after that develop the publishing rate to
several volumes each year. At the moment, the following volumes are under preparation:

A very beautiful book that besides all macromoths also covers the micromoths
traditionally collected by macro-lepidopterists such as Hepialidae, Sesiidae,
Zygaenidae etc., totally 958 species. For each species a short text divided in
the chapters Identification, Distribution, Larva, Imago and further there is a
map to each species of the Norwegian distribution. All species are illustrated
on the 163 colour plates, most of them slightly enlarged, which helps
identification of especially the smaller species like the genera Idaea and
Eupithecia. For each family a short introductionary chapter supplemented with
some extremely beautiful colour photos of live butterflies and moths, often
covering a whole page. The book has further short chapters on Lepidoptera,
Habitats, Distribution patterns, How to study and collect Lepidoptera,
Classification, Nomenclature. Both the photography and printing quality in this
book is very good and can probably not be done better.
The book is published by the Entomological Society of Norway in co-operation
with the Natural History Museum in Oslo. Apollo Books are appointed as sole
